Take These Steps to Protect Your Baby from Florida’s Summer Heat

Florida’s summer weather presents its own set of unique challenges, especially when it comes to the safety of your little ones. The heat can be a dangerous threat, so it is essential to take the right steps to protect your baby in the summer season.

Pay Attention to Ventilation

Babies do not sweat as effectively as adults. This makes it much harder for them to handle feeling overheated. Proper ventilation is the most important way to resolve this problem. Never leave a baby in a hot room or parked car, not even for a few minutes! Accidents can happen in the blink of an eye.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

A young child cannot express thirst clearly, so you need to remain proactive and provide cool water throughout the day. However, dehydration can occur when you least expect it, so learn to pay special attention for symptoms like restlessness, rapid breathing, flushed face, and skin that’s warm to the touch.

These symptoms of dehydration can lead to trouble quickly if extra fluids are not provided. Babies under six months of age only need extra breast milk or formula, while babies over six months can also benefit from water during hot weather. In fact, babies should drink 50 percent more water than usual in the summer.

Choose Outdoor Time Wisely

The sun is hottest between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., so try to stay indoors or at least in shade during these hours. Early morning and early evening are the best times to head outside. You and your baby will be able to enjoy the fresh air without the full strength of the sun.

Regardless of the time of day you head outside, it is always vital to use sunscreen. Use a zinc oxide-based sunblock on children over six months of age and reapply every two hours. Hats, sunglasses, and light SPF clothing will also help to prevent the sun from damaging that smooth baby skin.
